CAN was asked to re-imagine Savo’s Spine chair and interrogate the typically sterile world of task seating through an eclectic, material-led lens.
The three designs were generated using a collaborative, "exquisite corpse" process. The chair’s modular, tiered anatomy—comprising a seat, backrest, and headrest mounted on a central metal spine—offered the perfect vertical canvas for this blind sequence, with three of the CAN team selecting a fabric, texture, or color in isolation, without visibility of the previous choices.
By suspending the standard rules of composition, the process bypassed predictable, matching colorways in favor of uninhibited, highly tactile juxtapositions. The resulting chairs feature an intentionally layered and unexpected composition of contrasting finishes that celebrate the physical separation of the chair’s structural elements, shifting the pieces from highly technical task furniture to playful, tactile sculptures that disrupt the clinical monotony of the modern workspace.
