CAN was commissioned by Scandinavian office furniture manufacturer Savo to re-imagine their iconic modular office chair, the Savo Spine.

Responding to the chair’s inherently modular assembly, CAN approached the industrial redesign through a studio-wide game of Exquisite Corpse—a surrealist chance-based design methodology where each architect and designer independently selected a fabric, texture, or colorway for an individual component without viewing the other decisions.

The resulting bespoke workplace seating features a layered, unexpected material composition that highlights the modularity of commercial contract furniture. By applying surrealist artistic strategies to ergonomic office seating, the intervention showcases CAN’s characteristically eclectic aesthetic, turning standard workplace furniture into a playful, highly customized study in color theory, textile selection, and collaborative design.
