Yard

A radical housing prototype for a new creative community in North Yorkshire, this collaborative proposal with Esko Willman was developed for the RIBA Lakes and Dales Competition. The design prioritizes shared community space over private gardens, featuring simple, modular floor plates with ground-floor artist studios and co-working spaces that open directly onto a central communal yard. Rooted in sustainable regional architecture, the building pairs a low-carbon structural timber framework with a protective outer shell of locally sourced Yorkshire stone. The project balances rural housing design, collaborative living, and vernacular material craft to foster social connectivity and creative practice. Architecture by CAN in collaboration with Esko Willman.
