Commissioned by NOW Gallery for its 10-year anniversary, Up in Smoke is an immersive exhibition design and architectural installation on the Greenwich Peninsula, London, created by CAN in collaboration with artist John Booth.

The interactive installation transforms the gallery into a vibrant, scaled cityscape that explores the industrial heritage, social history, and urban transformation of Greenwich Peninsula from historic marshland and heavy industry to a contemporary cultural hub. Centering on five re-imagined structural chimneys—ranging from 18th-century gunpowder powder magazines and modern gasworks stacks to Victorian terraced housing chimneys—the design invites visitors to walk through, climb, and look inside the sculptural forms.

Blending spatial design, public art, and interactive urban storytelling, the exhibition bridges architectural history with community participation. Exhibition design and curation by CAN in collaboration with John Booth.
