The conversion of a derelict WW2 RAF Operations Block at the decommissioned RAF Spilsby in Lincolnshire into a low-impact family home weaves the site’s historic military legacy into its architectural fabric. CAN’s design merges the visual language of the airfield's wartime past with the utilitarian forms of surrounding industrial agricultural structures. The proposal reuses the existing building footprint and introduces elevated new-build elements specifically designed to mitigate impact on the surrounding ecologically sensitive landscape and biodiversity. Granted planning permission in March 2023, the adaptive reuse project balances historic preservation, rural residential architecture, and ecological sensitive design.
