Liquid Geology

CAN designed Liquid Geology, an experimental furniture collection comprising a dining table, coffee table, and side table that continues the practice's material research into unexpected material applications within product design.

The series pairs slimline, hand-cut steel enamel tops with chunky, craggy bases made from rubber rock—a proprietary material composition developed in-house using recycled rubber chips and resin.

Inspired by Claude Monet's 1880s Impressionist paintings of the River Thames, rugged coastal scenery, and deep-sea topography, the collection translates geographic landscapes into tactile interior design. The steel tops are lightly hand-bent to create a soft perimeter lip, finished in rich blue, green, or orange enamel, hand-splattered with contrasting tones, and kiln-fired at 820 degrees Celsius.

The reflective, lightly undulating enamel surfaces resemble floating water, resting on hand-cast, high-gloss rubber bases that mimic underwater rock outcrops. By juxtaposing heavy recycled industrial waste with delicate, high-temperature vitreous enamel, Liquid Geology merges sustainable circular materiality with fine art influences to create sculptural, otherworldly furniture.

The project won a Wallpaper* Design Award and was featured on HYPEBEAST and Dezeen.
