The project transforms the upper floors of an early 19th-century, Grade II listed townhouse above a traditional clog shop in Scarborough into five characterful holiday apartments. Subverting the ordinary, CAN breathed new life into the neglected bedsit layout by exploring the site’s rich cultural and material context, balancing sensitive heritage restoration—including repairing original sash windows and reinstating decorative plaster cornicing—with bold graphic interventions. Drawing direct narrative inspiration from the coastal town’s vibrant seaside vernacular, CAN designed each apartment to be unique with windbreak patterned walls, gingham caff kitchens, bathrooms tiled as ice cream flavours and room dividers based on beach huts and Scarborough castle to create a joyful, immersive, and striking retreat.
